Shovels & Rope are the husband-and-wife duo of Michael Trent and Cary Ann Hearst, known
for their fearless, genre-blurring blend of country, folk, bluegrass, Americana, and blues filtered
through a punk and indie rock sensibility. Since forming in 2008, they have built a reputation for
electrifying live performances, deeply honest songwriting, and a sound that is as unpredictable
as it is unmistakably their own.

The duo returns to Nelsonville in support of their latest album, Something Is Working Up Above
My Head. For the record, Trent and Hearst embraced a simple rule: everything they recorded
had to be something they could recreate live. The result is an album that captures the energy,
risk, and rawness of their live performances, with vulnerable characters, darkly humorous
narratives, and songs that move between intimate moments and full-throttle rock.

The album features “Love Song From A Dog,” which includes guest vocals from Gregory Alan
Isakov, as well as “Two Wolves,” a fuzzy, riff-driven rocker that the duo first performed live while
opening for Tyler Childers at Rupp Arena. Across the record, Shovels & Rope continue to push
beyond the expectations of the Americana label, embracing the messy, electric, and often
unexpected sides of their music.

Shovels &Rope last performed at Stuart’s Opera House in November 2025. The duo has also
appeared at the Nelsonville Music Festival in 2012 and 2014, making their return to Nelsonville
a continuation of a long-running connection with Southeast Ohio.
