Top8 - 06/09/25
June 09, 2025 - 12:50 AM
Welcome back to Top8. I want to wish all of our queer friends a very happy Pride. I have been out as at least one letter in LGBTQ for as long as I have been here, and I have always felt loved and seen and welcome at the radio station. I am so proud that, over the years, we have been one of many voices in Charleston that supports the LGBTQ community. Just in case some of the people in the back didn't quite catch it, I'll say it again. WTSQ stands with queer folk here in Charleston and everywhere. And I want to say this part even more clearly – if you're a trans or nonbinary kid, you're seen, you're valid, and you're loved. If you got no one else on your side, you've got me. My......

Charlie West Music Fest Launches Saturday
May 30, 2025 - 11:26 AM
By Bill Lynch At its heart, Saturday’s inaugural Charlie West Music Fest on the University of Charleston’s lawn is a fundraiser. All shows with a ticket price, of course, are, by nature, fundraisers, but this one isn’t to turn a profit. At least, the Charlie West Music Fest isn’t meant to turn a profit for Fund for the Arts, but for the arts groups it supports. Sarah Wright, the arts organization’s executive director said, “Our sole focus is to raise money for our 11 member arts groups, and you know, there are challenges with today’s landscape.” Money is tight for the arts. It’s a little worse now since the federal government......

Top8 - 05/26/25
May 25, 2025 - 03:55 PM
Welcome back to Top8. I hope everyone has had a good holiday weekend and that none of you were killed by a speeding bike. There have been some really lovely days in the last fortnight. Still, the horrors, as they say, persist. But we have each other. And we have music. Before I get into that, I am thinking a lot about hypernormalisation. I will just drop a paragraph from the wiki about it here. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HyperNormalisation The word hypernormalisation was coined by Alexei Yurchak, a professor of anthropology who was born in Leningrad and later went to teach at the University of California, Berkeley. He introduced the word in his book Everything Was Forever,......

Top8 - 05/12/25
May 12, 2025 - 09:05 PM
Welcome back to Top8, I hope everyone has had a good Mother's Day Weekend. I also hope that if holidays like this are weird for you, like they are for a lot of people, that you found some peace. This is going to be short(ish) and sweet this week because I have poorly managed my time this weekend. Send all your excuses to wtsq.org/contact Midwife - Signs Last time we talked about Midwife was back in September when she did this sick cover of Autoluminescent by Rowland S. Howard. "Signs" is an unreleased B-side. I should probably save precious Top8 real estate for EPs and albums. However, I love "Signs" and I love Midwife. This is extremely minimalist, reverby shoegaze. There's a real......

Songwriter Maya de Vitry Still Loves To Jam
May 09, 2025 - 09:37 AM
Maya de Vitry has a great relationship with her mom. The singer/songwriter who performs Mother’s Day (Sunday) on Mountain Stage at the Culture Center theater, said, “I’m lucky that she’s still here.” De Vitry called her mother a hero and an undeniable influence. “I’m the oldest of four kids,” she said. “She was, like, such a force growing up. She was a hands-on parent with taking us to music lessons and all of that. She was like the shuttle bus driver.” Parents do that kind of monotonous chore every day, but de Vitry’s mom filled the drive time with music, but she wasn’t much of a radio listener. “She loved......
