March 21, 2025 - 05:50 AM
WANT TO GO? Joslyn & The Sweet Compression, Holly Forbes and Emmy Davis WHEN: 7 p.m. Saturday (March 22) WHERE: Pumzi’s, 813 Hunt Avenue (Charleston) TICKETS: Suggested donation $20 INFO: Facebook Joslyn Hampton remembers where she was five years ago. In 2020, the singer and frontwoman for Joslyn and the Sweet Compression was working at a children’s hospital in eastern Kentucky. Hampton, who brings her band to Pumzi’s in Charleston Saturday night, said working at the hospital was her day job. The soul and funk singer balanced shifts at the hospital and shows with her band....

Welcome back to Top8. Things are so bad in the world that I started playing video games again. Is anyone else playing Fallout 4? I just need to keep my head together enough to survive until I finish school and leave WV behind forever. I would like to leave the US to burn in the fire it started, but there's really not a lot of good options for that. The best a person my age can manage is to try to move to somewhere like Minnesota or Oregon and hope we get a few good years in before the cancer metastisizes. Hope is for cishet white people with money. The rest of us can play video games. Anyway, send your favorite Fo4 companions to wtsq.org/contact. Mei Semones - I Can Do What......

March 12, 2025 - 04:16 PM
From the U.S. Department of Justice The “Wolf of West Virginia” Pleads Guilty to Wire Fraud Defendant Deceived Investors with Social Media Persona CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Theodore Miller, 35, of South Charleston, pleaded guilty today to two counts of wire fraud. Miller admitted to defrauding more than 170 individuals through two real estate-related investment schemes that caused losses of between $395,000 and $434,501. According to court documents and statements made in court, Miller conceived and perpetrated the two fraudulent schemes between the spring of 2022 and September 2024. One scheme solicited direct investments to develop modern residential......

Welcome back to Top8. I really should be writing a paper about the information behavior of a specific population of people. And here I am with you, talking about music. I don't have much else to feel good about these days. But I am grateful for all of you. Put on your headphones and let's do this. Send your reasons to ignore school work for a few hours to wtsq.org/contact Louella - Pedestrian Louella are a grungy, shoegazy out of Morgantown, WV. They are also exactly what I needed right now. I don't know these guys. I haven't seen them live. I have no idea what their unreleased songs are like. But I know that "Pedestrian" absolutely fucks. I am not a producer, but I would imagine......

Welcome back to Top8. There's lots of crazy new music happening right now, and I didn't even have room for it all. Maybe next time will suck and everything will just even out. We'll see. I have no idea what you should send to wtsq.org/contact L.A. Witch - 777 Out of every extant band that hasn't released an album for a while, L.A. Witch is probably the one I was missing the most. The new one is called DOGGOD and it should be out in early April. The lead single is the excellent "777". L.A. Witch plays fuzzed out reverby garage rock that will make you feel like you're about to be in a knife fight. There is just a bit of swaggery rockabilly by way of The Gun Club creeping in around the......

It's February. I'm sick. Everyone is sick. Everyone is tired. The world is on fire. I don't know what to tell you. Here's some music. Send hope to wtsq.org/contact. Viagra Boys - Man Made of Meat Is there a better post punk rock band in the world than Viagra Boys? Well, not that long ago, you could have made a strong argument for either Idles or Fontaines DC. Now though? The last Fontaines DC record, Romance, was pretty good, but a huge step down from Skinty Fia or A Hero's Death. And the last Idles album was as boring as V100 at 2 pm on a Tuesday. Recent times have found once rousing and interesting bands take turns for the "mature" and "well rounded" effort. Usually with some......

Welcome back to Top8. Winter proceeds. Some of us need to remember how bad summer is and feel a little better about the cold. I would rather wear a hoodie in the house than feel like I am going to peel my skin off and sit in front of the fan. On the other hand, 1°F is just not enough degrees. Cold is one thing, 1°F is kind of insane. As I am writing this though, the snow is the real thing. This is the heaviest blizzard I can remember seeing in a while. I hope everyone is as safe as you can be. Please send all soup recipes to wtsq.org/contact. Let's get into some new music. Lucy Dacus - Ankles Lucy Dacus sings about sexual intimacy in "Ankles" like some people sing about......

Welcome back to Top8. I want to wish everyone a very happy new year. Although, realistically, we all know 2025 will be one of the worst years of our lives. Personally, I am hoping that the bird flu kills me before the state of WV makes it illegal for me to step outside, but hey, I guess we will all find out together. December 2024 marked the end of a personal era for me as I wrapped up my personal show, Attention Please. I am starting grad school this month and I just didn't feel like I could spend the kind of time on the show that I needed in order to feel good about it. I am planning to keep co-hosting The Crows Nest with my dear friend Andrew Adkins, as well as maintain this blog. I......

Welcome back to Top8. In keeping with a little-known Solstice celebration practice, I have lopped off part of my left index finger while chopping parsley. So, this whole blog was slightly painful to type out. But, because I love you, I did it. A few of these tracks are a little older because this is a slow time of year for new music, but they aren't from like the 70's or something. I am writing to you from the front lines of the War on Christmas. We will fight to the last gasp for freedom from holiday cheer. Send your xmas greetings to wtsq.org/contact, because god knows I don't want them. Julien Baker & Torres - Sugar in the Tank I want to start out with one of my......

Before we get into the blog this week, an apology. This article is always due on Mondays. This Monday, our website was down. Subsequently, I just forgot until Wednesday morning. And then I forgot again when I got home and made focaccia instead. Then when I tried to post the article, the damned website glitched and didn't save it. So, here we are Thursday morning. The focaccia did turn out well though. With that out of the way, welcome back to Top8. I have a new desk setup in my apartment and my lamp is kind of shining right in my eyes. It's a kind of a wonky, garbage lamp which I have just been too cheap to replace, so honestly I only have myself to blame. Metaphor, that. I continue......
